World Thrombosis Day: Raising Awareness About Blood Clots and Vascular Health

By: Louisiana Heart & Vascular Institute Vein Care Centers

Every year on October 13, World Thrombosis Day highlights a condition that often goes unnoticed until it becomes life-threatening: blood clots. At Dr. Farhad Aduli’s Louisiana Heart & Vascular Institute Vein Care Centers in Covington, LA, we’re committed to educating our patients about the risks, prevention, and early detection of thrombosis to help save lives and improve vascular health.

What Is Thrombosis?

Thrombosis occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms inside a vein or artery, disrupting normal blood flow. If left untreated, these clots can travel to critical organs like the lungs (pulmonary embolism), heart (heart attack), or brain (stroke). There are two main types:

  • Venous Thrombosis: Clots form in the veins, often in the legs (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT).

  • Arterial Thrombosis: Clots form in arteries, potentially leading to heart attacks or strokes.

Why Awareness Matters

Thrombosis is one of the leading causes of preventable death worldwide. Yet, many people are unaware of their risk factors or the warning signs. Early recognition and lifestyle adjustments can dramatically reduce the danger.

Risk Factors for Blood Clots

You may be at higher risk for thrombosis if you have one or more of the following:

  • Prolonged immobility (long flights, bed rest, or sitting for hours)

  • Pregnancy or recent childbirth

  • Hormonal birth control or hormone replacement therapy

  • Family history of blood clots

  • Obesity or smoking

  • Certain medical conditions such as cancer, diabetes, or heart disease

Symptoms to Watch For

Early detection saves lives. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice:

  • Swelling, usually in one leg

  • Pain or tenderness in the calf or thigh

  • Redness or warmth over the affected area

  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing up blood (possible pulmonary embolism)

Preventing Thrombosis

You can significantly reduce your risk through healthy habits and medical awareness:

  • Stay active—move regularly during long flights or sitting periods

  • Maintain a healthy weight and diet

  • Stay hydrated to support circulation

  • Avoid smoking

  • Wear compression stockings if you’re at risk or on long trips

  • Follow up with your vein specialist for screenings and vascular assessments

When to See a Specialist

If you have persistent leg swelling, visible veins, or unexplained pain, a vein specialist can help assess your vascular health and recommend preventive or corrective treatments.

At Louisiana Heart & Vascular Institute Vein Care Centers, Dr. Farhad Aduli and his team provide comprehensive evaluations and state-of-the-art treatments for vein and vascular conditions, helping patients protect their long-term health.
